Rhythmic Gymnastics
Rhythmic Gymnastics is an Olympic Sport that combines the beauty, flow and elegance of ballet with the athleticism and acrobatic elements of gymnastics. A highly skilled rhythmic gymnast possesses the strength and endurance of a seasoned athlete, yet is able to display the grace of a ballerina. Intense gymnastics and ballet training are instrumental to the success of a rhythmic gymnast. The level of ballet skill of an Olympic caliber rhythmic gymnast rivals that of a prima ballerina.
Whether competing as an individual or a group, rhythmic gymnasts must employ the use of one or more hand-held apparatuses used in the sport. Competitors combine various elements of gymnastics and dance while simultaneously manipulating a hand-held apparatus. These include clubs, balls, hoops, ribbons, and rope.
As with other competitive sports that use music (such as figure skating) routines must be carefully choreographed and practiced rigorously.
Rhythmic gymnastics is primarily a female sport, however some countries have developed a discipline of the sport for males.
